Javier Macaya, CEO

Javier Macaya is the founder and CEO of New York based Athelera LLC which he established in January 2000.

Throughout his career Javier has represented clients in M&A transactions valued over $20 billion, acting as financial advisor to many leading companies, entrepreneurs and family groups in the Americas and Europe in the telecommunications, consumer products, media, retail and financial services industries.

Between 1996 and January 2000, Javier was a co-founder, partner and managing director of Violy, Byorum & Partners LLC, a Latin American-focused investment bank based in New York. Javier was one of four partners responsible for building the firm into an organization with over 100 employees and offices in New York, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Bogotá and Monterrey.

Between 1994 and 1996 Javier was an Associate at James D. Wolfensohn Incorporated, a New York based investment bank. Between 1991 and 1994 Javier was an Associate at JP Morgan´s investment banking department. Javier graduated from the JP Morgan Corporate Finance Program.

Javier is a Director of Compass Group and MPG USA. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Quantitative Economics from Tufts University in 1991 and currently is a member of Tufts' Board of International Board of Overseers and Tufts' Institute for Global Leadership. He is a native of Spain and has three children.

Rodrigo Bitar, Managing Director

Rodrigo Bitar joined Athelera in June 2003 as a Managing Director. He has worked on a wide range of industries including retail, technology, banking, food and real estate. Rodrigo has advised on mergers and acquisitions transactions across Latin America, working with multinational clients like IBM, Tata Consultancy Services, Ambev, Hasbro and Wendy's. Rodrigo has also worked with important family groups in the region including Grupo Cisneros, Grupo Pichincha and Almacenes Exito.

From 1999 to 2003, Rodrigo Bitar was a Vice President of Violy, Byorum & Partners, working on cross-border M&A transactions. Rodrigo also participated in the establishment of a Latin America focused Private Equity fund structured as a partnership with CDP, the largest pension fund of Canada. Rodrigo additionally acted as one of the lead bankers of VB&P´s technology practice both in advisory assignments and in principal activities.

In 1998, Rodrigo was a summer Associate at BT Alex.Brown´s Real Estate group in New York. From 1990 to 1997, Rodrigo led a number of ventures in Chile including a Chile-based real estate investment fund, an educational foundation (Fundación Mercator), and a national development foundation (Fundación Región y Desarrollo). Rodrigo successfully managed a campaign for a seat in the Senate of the Republic of Chile for Mr. Sergio Bitar and later acted as Chief of Staff for the Senator's first year in office.

Rodrigo holds a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard Business School and a Masters of Science and Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Chile, where he graduated with highest honors and received the Electrical Engineer of the Year Award. He is a native of Chile and has four children.

Henry Lloyd, Managing Director

Henry Lloyd is a Managing Director at Athelera Europe LTD. He joined in 2006 and is based in London.

Henry Lloyd has worked in UK corporate finance for 20 years, specializing in public mergers and acquisitions. He spent five years at JPMorgan, where he worked as a Managing Director in the UK M&A team, before joining JPMorgan Cazenove in a similar role. He worked on a number of transactions in a variety of sectors, including the sale of RMC to Cemex, the “white knight” offer by Honeywell for Novar and the purchase of Omnetica from KKR on behalf of Kingston Communications. He also advised British Airways on its merger discussions with KLM, Havas on its attempted takeover of Tempus and Brazilian steel company CSN on its merger discussions with Corus. In addition, he has worked on a number of public-to-private transactions, including acting for the management team of Riverdeep.

Prior to JPMorgan, Henry worked in the UK Investment Banking team at Credit Suisse First Boston (“CSFB”) following its acquisition of Barclays de Zoete Wedd (“BZW”). Whilst at CSFB, Henry’s transactions included acting for Wessex Water on its sale to Enron, for Sedgwick on its sale to Marsh & McLellan and for British Steel on its merger with Hoogovens to form “Corus”. At BZW, Henry worked on a wide range of transactions, including flotations, privatizations, M&A and capital market transactions (principally rights issues and convertibles).

Maria Paula Carriço, Director

Maria Paula Carriço is a Director at Athelera LLC. She joined in October 2005. From 1999 to 2005 Maria Paula worked at Violy & Company and Violy, Byorum & Partners as an Associate and Vice President providing strategic advisory and capital raising capability to companies across sectors in Latin America. Maria Paula developed a particular focus in the telecommunications, airline, gaming, beverage and packaging industries as well as in the development of new business opportunities and client relationship.s.

From 1996 through 1999, Maria Paula was a Corporate Finance Analyst at Lehman Brothers within the Latin America and Global Privatization Groups where she focused primarily on strategic advisory assignments with clients in the telecommunications and energy sectors in Latin America. Assignments included the strategic advisory to the Government of Brazil regarding the privatization of the telecommunications sector, and M&A privatization advisory to Telefonica Internacional on their acquisition of telecommunications assets in Brazil totaling US$10 billion.

In 1995, Maria Paula was a summer professional at the Inter-American Development Bank's Project Evaluation department in Washington D.C.. From 1994 to 1996, Maria Paula worked part-time at the Harvard Institute for International Development in Boston on a number of projects focused on the evaluation of economic and environmental development projects around the world.

Maria Paula holds a Master in Environmental and Energy Analysis from Boston University and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Universidad de Belgrano, Buenos Aires. Maria Paula is a citizen of Brazil and is fluent in Portuguese, Spanish, English and French.

Roberto Sánchez, Director

Roberto Sánchez is a Director at Athelera LLC which he joined in 2004. He has extensive experience in projects in the financial services, retail, and media and entertainment industries across Ibero-America.

From 1997 until 2003 Roberto worked at Violy, Byorum & Partners, initially joining as a Senior Analyst and subsequently promoted to Associate and Vice President, where he focused on Mergers & Acquisitions advisory with clients in the media, entertainment and financial services sectors throughout North and South America. Sample clients have ranged from multinationals such as Bristol Myers-Squibb to large family-owned groups such as Calvin Klein, the Cisneros Group of Companies and Casa Editorial El Tiempo. As a result of his sound analytic skills and in-depth knowledge of finance, Roberto took on added responsibilities becoming head of research and training at VB&P responsible for designing the firm´s training effort and establishing a research team and database infrastructure to support bankers.

Between 1994 and 1997 Roberto was a Financial Analyst at Goldman, Sachs & Co.´s Corporate Finance Department and Financial Institutions Group working primarily in cross border mergers and acquisitions assignments, and equity and debt placements for corporate clients such as Banco Santander, Banamex, Banco de Galicia y Buenos Aires, Bristol Myers-Squibb, Instrumentation Laboratory (Italy) and Grupo Desc (Mexico) as well as bond placements and exchanges for Argentina, Colombia and Mexico.

Roberto is a citizen of Mexico and an honors graduate from Brown University where he was named a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon (Economics Honors Society) and Sigma Chi (Scientific Honors Society) as well as named recipient of the Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award.

Juliana Rodriguez, Vice President

Juliana Rodríguez joined Athelera as an associate in October 2007. From 2005 to 2007, Juliana was an Investment Banking Associate at Rothschild Mexico providing strategic, debt and financial advisory to several clients in Mexico, Central America and the Andean region. Clients included the Government of Colombia and private companies in the infrastructure, mining, logistics, and consumer product industries.

From 2001 to 2003, Juliana worked at Violy, Byorum & Partners as an Investment Banking Analyst covering the Andean region and the Central American markets. Clients included private companies in the apparel industry, retail sector, processed meat industry and a cement producer.

During the summer of 2006, Juliana worked at the Mexican Ministry of Finance and Public Credit conducting an independent research on the Mexican Payment System and the role of the government in assuring efficient monetary transactions.

Juliana holds a Master in Economic Development from Harvard University and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Universidad de los Andes in Colombia. She also studied in France for a year, obtaining an International Diploma in Management from the Institut Commercial de Nancy (ICN). Juliana is a citizen of Colombia and is fluent in Spanish, English and French.

Julian Wassenaar, Vice President

Julian Wassenaar joined Athelera as an associate in December 2009. From 2007 to 2009, Julian was an associate in the M&A group of Evercore Partners, where he advised clients on mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, share repurchases, capital structure optimization, sale leasebacks, and other strategic transactions. Clients included privately and publicly-held companies in the energy, financial services, healthcare and consumer product industries in Europe, the United States and Latin America.

Prior to graduate school, Julian worked for three years as a strategy consultant at Oliver Wyman, where he worked in the consumer products, energy, pharmaceutical, and life sciences sectors.

Julian graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with an M.B.A from The Wharton School and an M.A. in International Studies. He received a B.A. in International Relations from Stanford University. He is a U.S. citizen and is fluent in Spanish and conversational in Portuguese.

Manuel Sansigre, Associate

Manuel Sansigre joined Athelera Europe LTD in May 2012. Prior to Athelera, Manuel was a Senior M&A Analyst at Arcano Group within the IB division where he advised clients on mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, management buyouts and leveraged buyouts among other processes. Located in Madrid, he advised to clients including Private Equity firms, Hedge Funds, family-owned companies and corporations in the TMT, FIG, Energy and Transportation sectors.

From 2004 to 2008, Manuel worked at IBM within the Global Services division as ITD Financial Controller and Strategic Planner for the South European region. He advised the GM and CFO on strategic planning, financial and market analysis; and assumed various financial roles within the organization.

Manuel graduated from the IE Business School with a Masters in Advanced Finance. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in Law from Carlos III University in Madrid. He studied Business Administration in France for a year where he was granted an Erasmus Scholarship from the Sorbonne University. Manuel is Spanish citizen and fluent in English, Spanish and French.

Eric Sevillia, Analyst

Eric Sevillia joined Athelera as an Analyst in July 2011. Prior to Athelera, Eric was an Investment Banking Analyst at Credit Suisse within the Latin American IB division providing strategic and financial advisory to clients throughout Latin America.

Eric also worked at Anvil Advisors providing valuation and financial advisory to emerging growth companies with a particular focus on private company and portfolio valuations for hedge funds and venture capital managers. Clients included private companies in the technology, social media, software, advertising, insurance, retail, communication, energy, financial, health and pharmaceutical industries.

From 2008 to 2009, Eric worked at Aleutian Capital Partners providing M&A advisory to middle market private equity clients by identifying and sourcing platform, stand along and add-on opportunities. During the summer of 2007, Eric worked at Global Private Client Group at Merill Lynch conducting research and assessing investment opportunities alongside a team of high net worth private bankers.

Eric holds a Bachelor Degree in Science from the Stern School of Business from New York University. Eric is an Argentinean and U.S. citizen and is fluent in Spanish, English and has knowledge of Hebrew.

Nicholas Hanabergh, Analyst

Nicholas Hanabergh joined Athelera in June 2011 as an analyst. In 2010, Nicholas worked as a summer associate at Ares Management LLC. While at Ares Private Equity, Nicholas participated in opportunistic majority or shared-control investments, principally in under-capitalized middle market companies. He was responsible for attending management presentations, conducting due diligence, and creating leveraged buyout models. During his time at Ares Private Debt, Nicholas assisted as an analyst in providing non-control equity financing solutions to private equity led middle market buyouts.

During the summer of 2008, Nicholas worked as an analyst on the Hencorp Capital LC commodity trading floor. He conducted research, developed trading and hedging strategies for clients and assisted in writing and publishing the Hencorp Daily Coffee Futures Report.

Nicholas holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management with a double concentration in Finance and Economics from Babson College where he was an active member of the Babson Investment Banking Association and Latin American Entrepreneurship Forum. Nicholas is both a citizen of the United States and Colombia. He is fluent in English and Spanish.

Christian Patiño, Analyst

Christian Patiño joined Athelera as an Analyst in April 2012. Prior to Athelera, Christian was an Investment Banking Analyst at Ladenburg Thalmann & Co. Inc., where he provided financial advisory and capital raising assistance for emerging growth companies in the United States and internationally . Christian was involved with all phases of the deal execution process, including valuation analyses, on-site due diligence, preparation of marketing materials, and participating in investor road shows. Clients included public and private companies in transportation, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, gaming, shipping, mining, and construction & engineering industries.

Christian completed a 5-Year BSFS/MA program at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service, a Master of Arts in Latin American Political Economy, and a Honors Certificate in International Business Diplomacy. While at Georgetown, Christian studied for a semester at the Potifica Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Christian is both a citizen of the United States and Mexico. He is fluent in English and Spanish, and conversational in Portuguese.

Bari Jamnik, CFO

Bari Jamnik joined Athelera in 2007. Bari graduated from The George Washington University located in Washington, D.C. with a Bachelors of Accountancy degree. Prior to joining the team, Bari was the Accounting Department Manager at Violy, Byorum & Partners from 2001 to 2003. Between 1994 and 2001, Bari held the position of Assistant Controller in a Manhattan based law firm and an Accounting Department Supervisor in a Cogeneration Technology firm.

Esther Guerra, Office Manager

From 2005 to 2009, Esther collaborated with Page Break, a start-up company focused in audio-visual edition and producing feature films and videos.

Between 2002 and 2004, she worked at Acoustic Dimensions, an acoustics design company, as a designer. She created and maintained a database of performing arts spaces, as well as an application to improve office management.

While living in Barcelona, she joined Retevision, one of the leading telecommunications company in Spain, as a consultant, dealing with such different issues as the design and implementation of databases in different software platforms or programming and configuring a switchboard. She also worked as an Information Systems Administrator in TNT, a real-time parts supplier to Seat, the main Spanish car manufacturer.

Ana Posada, Admin. Assistant

Born in Spain, Ana Posada studied journalism at Complutense University in Madrid. She has worked at several major film festivals, including the San Sebastian Festival, where she joined the industry sales department. She has also worked as a journalist for the official magazine of Seminci Festival. Ana has been a frequent contributor to the cultural-fashion magazine Vanidad (Spain) and Facto (Peru). In 2007, Ana moved to New York to work for the Cultural Department of Instituto Cervantes. She joined Athelera in June 2008.

Diego Arria, Advisory Board, Chairman

Diego E. Arria was until recently Assistant Secretary General and Special Adviser to the Secretary General of the United Nations.

Diego currently serves in the advisory boards of Unilever (Latin America), The International Center for Ethics Justice and Public Life at Brandeis University, The Latin American Advisor of the Inter American Dialogue, The Institute of the Americas at the University of California in San Diego, The International Crisis Group, The School of International Service at American University, The Chairman's Council of the Americas Society, and of the boards of the United Nations Association of the United States and of the Museum of Art and Design of New York.

Diego served as the Ambassador of Venezuela to the United Nations and was President of the UN Security Council. Has also served previously as Senior officer of the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington DC, Advisor to the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Visiting Scholar at Columbia University President of The Habitat Foundation, Governor of Caracas, Congressman and Minister of Information and Tourism of Venezuela, CEO of the Centro Simon Bolivar (the urban development agency of Caracas), Founding Editor of Diario de Caracas, Visiting Diplomatic Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in NY, board member of the International Peace Academy in NY, Senior Consultant to BellSouth International and Chairman of Technology Holdings International.

Diego studied Economic and Political Sciences in Venezuela and at the University of Michigan. He writes frequently for newspapers in the United States and Latin America. Diego lectures on international issues, and is a regular commentator on United Nations issues in BBC and CNN.

Albert Fishlow, Advisory Board

Albert Fishlow is Professor of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University and Columbia and Director of the Center for Brazilian Studies and Director of the Institute for Latin American Studies at Columbia University.

Albert was Paul A. Volcker Senior Fellow for International Economics at the Council of Foreign Relations until June 30, 1999. Previously Dr. Fishlow had been Professor of Economics and Dean of International and Area Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. Albert has also been Visiting Professor at the Yale School of Management, and Professor of Economics and Director of the Center for International & Area Studies at Yale University.

Albert served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs from 1975 to 1976, and has been a member of a number of public groups relating to Latin America. Albert was the first president of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association (LACEA). In 1999, he was awarded the National Order of the Southern Cross by the government of Brazil.

Albert´s published research has addressed issues in economic history, Brazilian and Latin American development strategy, as well as economic relations between industrialized and developing countries. His most recent book is a volume in Portuguese titled Desenvolvimento no Brasil e Na Latinoamerica (Development in Brazil and Latin America), published in 2004 by Editora Paz e Terra. Other recent publications include “Brazil: FTA or FTAA or WTO?” in Jeffrey Schott (ed.), Free Trade Agreements (Institute for International Economics, 2004); The United States and the Americas: a 21st century View (with James Jones, New York, NY, 1999); "Latin America in the XXI century," in Louis Emmerij, (ed.), and Economic and Social Development into the XXI century; (Inter-American Development Bank, 1997).

Manuel Balbontin, Advisory Board

Manuel J. Balbontín has over 20 years experience in Asset Management, Investment Banking, both in M&A and Capital Markets, and Private Equity investments in Latin America and other Emerging Markets.

Manuel J. Balbontín is a founding partner and CEO of Compass Group LLC, a Latin American investment advisor that offers Latin American investment solutions to global investors and global investment solutions to Latin American Investors. Compass Group, established in New York in 1995, together with its affiliates in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru has become one of the largest independent asset manager in each of the countries that operates and the only one with a wide regional office network.

Before starting Compass, in 1993 Manuel was one of the Co-Founders of Santander New World Investments Group, a New York based Emerging Markets investment arm of Banco Santander in New York. During his tenure in Santander, Manuel was a Managing Director and Portfolio Manager of two emerging markets equities and fixed income portfolios.

From 1989 to 1993 Manuel worked on the capital markets team and soon became the syndicate head and co-head of sales and trading of Citicorps' emerging markets groups in New York and London. He also had the responsibilities to oversea EM sales and trading teams in Hong Kong and Tokyo. Between 1985 and 1987, Manuel worked in the investment bank of Citicorp in Chile were he worked in several mergers and acquisitions and restructuring transactions.

Manuel holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and BSc in Business Administration and Economics from the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile.

Manuel is married, has three kids and has been living in New York for over 18 years earned his MBA from Harvard Business School.
